Making An Impact - PRESENT

"Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today."

-Malcolm X

"I've always believed that education is one of the vital factors in breaking the poverty cycle. Since becoming a mom in 2016, I've carried a burden in my heart. Recognizing that we are incredibly lucky to be where we are has led to a realization that we were called to go beyond, to make a difference, and to effect change; no matter how small, if we each play our part, we will see change.

We had been on the lookout for charities that made a direct impact in the lives of children through education. When a friend shared about The Rise Above Foundation, I knew we had found a meaningful starting point. We chatted with Flemming, who runs the foundation with his wife, Elisabet, and settled on sponsoring two little girls that had been waiting in line for sponsorship for way too long.

The sponsorship covers a package containing their school uniforms, PE and scout uniforms, a school bag, books, pencils and other school materials, and most importantly a daily lunch ticket to ensure they are well fed.

We are incredibly excited to journey alongside Nathaly and Jannie, and with your continuing support, we hope to sponsor more children in the coming years. Expect quarterly updates on Nathaly and Jannie through this page, and if you'd like to share other meaningful causes, please get in touch at"

Nathaly is a quiet and shy 8 year old who lives with her parents and four siblings in Guadalajara, Guadalupe, Cebu City. Her father is a driver and her mother looks after the family and runs a small store near their home. The family lives together in simple conditions.

Currently in Grade 2 at Guadalupe Elementary School, Nathaly works hard and takes the initiative to help wherever she can. As a result of her hard work, Nathaly is also an honor student at her school.

Nathaly is enjoying herself doing the artworks together with other sponsored kids.

Jannie is a vivacious, creative girl that expresses herself through art and dance. Jannie lives with her parents and two siblings in Guadalajara, Guadalupe, Cebu City. As the sole breadwinner, her father works hard at his job as a stillman to support the family, and her mother looks after the family. The family lives together in a single room.

Currently in Grade 3 at Banawa Elementary School, Jannie is keen and attentive, regularly joining in on educational activities at Rise Above's Community Centre outside of school hours. Thoughtful and outgoing, Jannie helps her parents look after her younger siblings.

More than willing to draw. :)

Zac is a bubbly and energetic little boy.

Before the pandemic hit, he would visit the Rise Above’s Community Centre together with his siblings, actively participating in the centre’s social activities, such as weekly Capoiera sessions and film screenings. He also enjoys dancing around his parents and siblings, spreading joy and fun to everyone around him.

Let's not forget a selfie with the Capoiera master after every Saturday session :)

Jannah is a shy, independent girl. Her parents work in the Mayor’s office and care for her deeply.

Despite being reserved, Jannah enjoys spending time at the Rise Above’s Community Centre and playing with the children there. She is well-loved by the people around her.

The global pandemic has had crippling effects on schools the world over. No one has been spared, and the children at the Rise Above Foundation have had to cope with significant disruptions to their school and home lives.

Cebu City has been under strict lockdown for a few months, as the Philippines continues to contain the Covid-19 outbreak. Because of this, the Community Centre has remained closed and community activities have stopped. The children are staying at home, but are well taken care of by their families.

Despite the imposed lockdown, the folks at Rise Above have been working hard to provide physical sustenance and emotional support during this trying time. While the children are not able to visit the centre now, they have been receiving regular food distribution packages from Rise Above, which has helped their families immensely to support themselves and put food on the table.

No one knows for sure when this pandemic will be over. But we do know that we will continue supporting these children as they cope with these unprecedented challenges in their hometown. We coined a new initiative #ThankfulThursday on our Instagram to share the gift of gratitude with our loved ones, and we’ve been very grateful for your enthusiasm to support our cause. It truly means the world to us, that you believe in giving back to communities that need it most.

The road to recovery will not be easy, but we believe that strength lies in unity – as we continue to journey alongside Nathaly, Jannie, Jannah and Zac, we hope that you can join us as well. Together, we will seek better, brighter days ahead.
